Most CenterPoint packages ship with a 4x32 multi-reticle scope, and the question that brings owners here is almost always the same: what do the stacked horizontal lines mean, and why do they not line up with where the bolt actually hits? The short answer is that the lines are calibrated to a speed, and if your bow or your bolt weight does not match that speed, the lines are approximate rather than wrong.
What the Stacked Lines Actually Are
A crossbow scope reticle is not a rifle crosshair with extra clutter. The lines are holdover marks: the top crosshair is your zero, and each line below it corresponds to a longer distance where the bolt has dropped further.
On a typical 4x32 crossbow scope the lines are spaced for 20, 30, 40 and 50 yards, with the top crosshair set at 20. That spacing is calculated for a specific bolt speed. A scope calibrated around 370 feet per second on a bow shooting 350 will put every line slightly short of its labelled distance, and on a bow shooting 400 slightly long.
This is why two people with the same scope get different results and both assume the other is doing something wrong. Neither is - the reticle is a model, and the model has inputs.
Sighting In: The Order That Works
Do this at a proper backstop, with the same bolts you intend to hunt with.
- Start at 20 yards using the top crosshair only. Ignore every other line until the top one is dead on.
- Adjust in the direction the bolt needs to move. Crossbow scope turrets move the point of impact, not the reticle - if you are hitting low, you are dialling up.
- Shoot groups of three, not single bolts. A single bolt tells you nothing about whether the bow or you moved.
- Only then check the lower lines. Shoot 30, 40 and 50 yards using the corresponding line and note where each actually lands.
- Write down the real distances. If the second line is actually hitting at 33 yards rather than 30, that is now your number. Tape it to the stock.

Speed Rings and Adjustable Reticles
Better crossbow scopes solve the calibration problem directly with a speed adjustment - a ring on the magnification collar that you set to your bow's actual measured speed, which shifts the effective spacing of the holdover lines. Set the ring correctly and the labelled distances become genuinely accurate rather than approximate.
If you are upgrading from a bundled 4x32, this is the feature to upgrade for, more than glass quality or magnification. A variable 1.5-5x32 with a speed ring covers close treestand shots and longer open ground, and it removes the guesswork that the fixed 4x32 leaves you with.
Illumination, Batteries and Cold
Red and green illuminated reticles are genuinely useful in low light, which is when most hunting shots present themselves. Two practical notes:
- Carry spare batteries. Illumination dies at the worst possible time and the batteries are usually a coin cell you do not have a spare of at home.
- Cold kills coin cells fast. A battery that tested fine in a warm house can be dead after a few hours in a stand at freezing point. Replace them at the start of the season rather than when they fail.
Also check the reticle is still visible with illumination off - if the etched reticle is too fine to see against a dark animal without the light, the scope is the wrong choice for low-light hunting regardless of how good the illumination is.
Mounting and Rings
CenterPoint crossbows use a Picatinny or Weaver rail, and bundled scopes come with rings that fit. If you are fitting an aftermarket scope, check ring height against the bow: too low and the objective bell fouls the rail, too high and you lose a consistent cheek weld, which reintroduces exactly the inconsistency the scope is there to remove.
Torque the ring screws evenly and in stages rather than fully tightening one at a time, and re-check them after the first twenty shots. Crossbow recoil is sharper than people expect, and a scope that shifts in the rings will read as a bow that will not hold zero.
